Mondo The Real Ghostbusters Egon Spengler

Reinforcements have arrived for both ghosts and Ghostbusters.

It’s a Halloween miracle! The second figure in the Mondo The Real Ghostbusters line of action figures, Egon Spengler, had been bumped to November. Even when I got my shipping notification from Mondo it said a delivery date of November 1st. It felt almost cruel to receive a Ghostbusters toy the day after Halloween, but that’s life in 2025 where government action has thrown a giant wrench into shipments coming from overseas. To my delight, Egon managed to get to me faster than anticipated and there are now two Ghostbusters on my shelf for Halloween 2025!

They look pretty good together.

For Egon, I decided to forego the companion ghost Mondo offered of Boogieman. If you have not been following along, Mondo’s license to produce figures based on The Real Ghostbusters necessitated an MSRP over $100 per figure. That’s a lot of cheddar and while I whipped out the old credit card for Peter and Samhain, I did not feel the need to do so for Boogieman. Samhain is perhaps the most memorable ghost for me from the old cartoon not named Slimer and Stay Puft so it made sense to splurge and have him be my lone ghost representative on the shelf. The only downside to that is I do think I’m missing out on some more elaborate ghosts as Peter and Samhain, being first out the door, may have been forced to shoulder more of the tooling costs than what followed as all of those seem to come with more stuff. Oh well. I’ve made my decision and I’m sticking to it. Plus it’s not as if Egon is entirely alone.

Egon comes in a pretty large box for what’s inside. It’s modeled after a ghost trap and it’s very nice, though perhaps a bit over-the-top. Egon is another sculpt by Alex Brewer and he’s mostly unique. Mondo has stated the forced MSRP did allow them to put more money into things like materials and tooling which basically means the Ghostbusters won’t all have to share the same body. It would have been easy to just tool up one figure and release it four times. Egon, in addition to the obvious change being the head, appears to have new legs and maybe a new torso. The neck part is definitely new as there’s no undershirt present, but that may be glued into the same torso as Peter. The boots and hands are the same and probably the arms. He’s taller than Peter at around 6.75″ which also further confirms that this line is bigger than true 1:12 scale, but the figures do at least scale well with each other.

The sculpt is certainly on-model and the most on-model representation of Egon we’ve ever had and are likely to ever have. The face has that neutral, but also thoughtful, expression that is pure Egon. The man is always thinking. There’s a slight bagginess to the jumpsuit and even his adam’s apple looks pretty damn accurate to the source material. What may not be is the paint. The quality of the application of which is mostly pretty good. The trim on the jumpsuit, the facial details, boot trim – all that stuff is damn near perfect. The only thing that could be better is the opacity on the white of the “No Ghosts” logo on his right sleeve. What may not be accurate is the shade of blue used for the jumpsuit. It’s a more saturated, less yellow, blue than I picture when I think of The Real Ghostbusters. I had to go back to the show to see if my memory was betraying me and I found that, no, it’s not. This shade is closest to the opening title animation, but still a more vibrant blue than even that. Once episodes start, the blue gets toned down to damn near gray in a lot of episodes. If I’m just speaking for me, I don’t hate it or even really care all that much. Blue is my favorite color and this shade Mondo used does really pop in-hand. If I’m being an honest reviewer though, it’s not 100% accurate to the show and that might bother some. And at $101, you’re certainly allowed to be pretty demanding of the final product.

Egon’s accessories are both familiar and new. In terms of familiar, he has his proton pack, trap, beam effect, and gloved gripping hands. These are all the exact same items Peter came with and are the same quality. I was hoping for a running change with the holster on the proton pack to utilize a more pliable plastic, but Mondo is thus far sticking with the rigid one. I haven’t had any issues with it, but I’m also not engaging with it much. For new stuff we get a secondary portrait which depicts Egon in a state of fright. It’s not a hysterical fright, but like Peter’s angry expression, it appears to be intended to be used in conjunction with the proton beam effect. Egon also has his own trap element which appears to be for the Sandman. Boogieman wasn’t an actual ghost and did not get sucked into the trap in his debut episode hence why Egon doesn’t come with that. The sculpt and paint effects are fantastic and this is one of the best pieces of ingenuity to come out of this line.

Egon also has his PKE Meter. This is the little handheld device used to measure ghost activity. Mondo even engineered it to have a pop-out antenna like it did in the show which is really cool at this scale. The detail on this little thing is pretty incredible and the paint is flawless as well. It can also be clipped to the little, yellow, ring dangling from his belt. If the particle thrower isn’t enough firepower for you, Egon also comes with a ghost bomb. It too has a pop-out element built in and it’s a neat little device that I do not remember from the show, but is cool to have. It’s hard to get the cylinder to actually pop out and stay and I couldn’t fit it into any of Egon’s hands. It would be nice to have more options. Lastly, Egon has his own little ghost buddy and it’s the nameless blue-white blob leading the pack of ghosts in the original opening title. It’s pretty cool to get this guy in plastic form after seeing him countless times in that opening. I felt like the Muncher from Afterlife was based on this guy, but I have no idea if that’s true or not, which makes me want to call this guy Muncher. Either way, he’s structurally similar Slimer and is about the same size so you can have him hanging around with your busters or ghosts, as you see fit. His arms swivel, but that’s all the articulation you’re going to get. His stand is actually different which surprised me, but still the same height and engineering.

Egon’s parts may have been retooled, but his articulation is functionally the same as Peter’s. You get joints at the head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees, and ankles. All pretty standard stuff with no double joints. The shoulders are ball-jointed with some forward and back play, but not enough to consider the joint a true butterfly joint. Egon won’t be able to hold his beam out in front, but he can hold it across his belly/chest like Peter to get a “good enough” blasting pose. He can hold the other items well and he also stands just fine. Mondo does include a small, disc, stand for those concerned about shelf dives, but it’s definitely not needed. The only other negative here is Egon wasn’t as smooth out of the box as Peter. The hips and especially the ball-joint in the neck were pretty stuck for me. I was able to get the neck moving with heat, but once it cooled back down it went back to the same level of tightness as before. The hips I hit with some lubricating oil and it helped a bit, but he’s still not moving as well as Peter which is a shame.

Next year there should be four of them.

Egon in most respects is every bit as good as Peter, but with more stuff. That might make him the superior release for some, but which figure you prefer is going to come down to which Ghostbuster was your favorite and how your figure turned out. The price is high, but the quality of the paint and scult are terrific. Peter handled quite well, but Egon is a step behind which is disappointing at this price. I also maintain that we should be getting more hands in the box. The gloved hands feel unessential to me, but I understand why they’re included. We just need non gripping hands for when they’re not holding accessories and wider hands when they come with bigger accessories like ghost bombs. Egon could really use a pointing hand for adjusting his glasses or just for pointing in general. Ray has already been solicited at this point without any such things included, but I’d love it if they could find room in the budget to add a few extras to his set that could then be shared with Egon and Peter. Winston is basically on his own there though. If you ever wanted premium The Real Ghostbusters collectibles, this is basically your only option. I’m overall content with Egon, but I do wish he was nicer in hand. Nevertheless, I look forward to adding Winston and Ray in the future so I can assemble the full squad for some busting action. Mondo The Real Ghostbusters Peter Venkman and Samhain

I didn’t do a big 2024 wrap-up type of post like I sometimes do, but if I did I would have awarded toy producer Mondo with the biggest reveal of the year when they debuted their line of action figures based on The Real Ghostbusters. The Real Ghostbusters was one of many 80s properties to have its moment in the sun when it came to toys, but ever since the original Kenner line ended in 1991 little has been produced based on the property. Diamond Select gave it a shot, Mego did as well, and current license holder Hasbro has dabbled in re-releases of the old Kenner toyline. What has alluded collectors and fans of the old cartoon and toyline is a truly dedicated, collector-friendly, line of modern action figures that better match the style of the show. Not to be denied, action figure sculptor and designer Alex Brewer made his own digital mock-ups of what he thought a modern line would look like and shared his work on social media. The response was pretty big and it helped get his employer, Mondo, to kick the tires on bringing his vision to life.

I have a pretty good memory, but I can’t reliably recall my life before The Real Ghostbusters. It was my first love when it came to action figures. I liked Matchbox and Tonka products prior to, but no figure line captivated me like The Real Ghostbusters. I have no idea how I was introduced to the property or what my first toy was from the series. I can’t remember getting the iconic firehouse playset or the Ecto-1, my memory basically starts with them in my possession. I can remember getting excited for the Ecto-3 and the tie-in products with the release of Ghostbusters II. I had some roleplay items including the trap, and in general I just had an awesome time playing with my Ghostbusters toys and watching the cartoon every afternoon.

Mondo also threw-in some cardboard standees of popular ghosts from the Kenner line.

Then came the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For a little while, the two co-existed, but eventually The Real Ghostbusters were phased out by the turtles, Bucky O’Hare, and eventually X-Men. Most of my toys would be sold in yard sales, though somehow my fright features Peter Venkman survived. I don’t think it was for any particular reason even though he was always my favorite, I think he just got misplaced. As an adult collector, I have wanted to reconnect with my former love, but no one was offering up the right product. Sure, I enjoy the theatrical version of these characters, but I don’t associate it with toys so I’ve never felt much of a compulsion to collect any of those outside of a pair of Venkmans. The Kenner reissues also don’t really do anything for me and I’m actually much happier with the Lego stuff I have, but The Real Ghostbusters? That’s the stuff I really want, so I was pretty damn excited when Mondo unveiled Peter and the best ghost from the show, Samhain. What I was not happy about was the price, and we’ll get to that, but as far as what Mondo was doing I was more than pleased and pretty damn excited to get my hands on them.

The first set has taken awhile to get here, but it’s finally here. Originally expected to arrive in May, the circus that is the current United States government messed things up with its tariff policy and the elimination of the de minimis shipping exemption. Mondo used to ship directly from the factory to your door, but the cost to do so increased overnight and made that impossible. They had to scuttle their whole operation and the result is a delay of about 3 months. The good news is we still received Pete and Samhain before the fall season hits as I suspect a lot of folks would like to have them on display for Halloween. The set was sold exclusively last fall on Mondo’s website as a two-pack while Peter was sold individually in all of the usual places. It came packaged in a huge box that recreates the front door of the firehouse and there’s artwork on the back which lists out all of the people responsible for the set’s creation. The front opens in the middle and is held fast by magnets revealing a window display behind it, though there’s so much tissue paper over the figures to protect them that it’s not very useful. My box also arrived pretty banged-up, but since it’s intended purpose is to protect the figures inside I can say it at least accomplished its goal.

Mondo typically lives in the scale of 1:6, but this line is its first foray into 1:12. Peter stands at around 6.5″ tall so I’m not entirely sure if its true 1:12 scale or not. That would make Pete 6.5′ tall and while he might be, I can’t say I ever thought of him as especially tall. The only thing he has to scale with is Samhain, Slimer, and the other Ghostbusters so I can’t say I’m all that concerned by it. Out of the box, he’s sporting a bit of a smirk with a raised left eyebrow which captures Peter’s personality well. He’s in his classic brown jumpsuit with teal color, black boots, and gray belt. There are some sculpted accessories attached to his belt that jump right off the screen. I have no idea what this yellow hook is or this thing that looks like a tape measure is or does, but I recognize them from the show. The paint is super crisp and matte. This figure has all of the detail work one would expect from Mondo’s sixth scale figures, but at a smaller scale.

What really stands out is Peter’s proton pack. Brewer and painter Mark Bristow must have studied countless frames of animation to make sure everything is just right. It has all of the little details one would expect and yet there’s a simplicity to it which reflects the animation. The paint is pristine with little or no slop anywhere on the pack itself and the wand. The neutrona wand is connected via a very pliable, plastic, hose that does not detach from either the wand or the pack so there’s nothing to fiddle with. It’s plenty long so it won’t get stressed by placing it in the figure’s hands or when it’s holstered. Equally detailed is the included trap accessory. It looks fantastic and has a bendy wire that connects to the plastic foot pedal. The trap can be hung from the side of the pack just like it was on the show and there’s another hook for the bendy wire to be wrapped around. I was mildly concerned with the durability of the wire, but it seems strong and I don’t see any cracking of the plastic around it. The pack itself is a fairly light, but hard, plastic including the holster for the wand. That part is a little scary as it takes some mild effort to click the handle of the wand into place. It’s the part to be most mindful of as it doesn’t feel like it would take much to snap it. The pack goes on over Peter’s head pretty easily and the belt tabs into the back of the pack. It’s not the easiest thing to snap into place, but it also doesn’t really need to be secured for it to stay in place either (because it’s reenforced with a magnet, which I didn’t realize until after this review went live) so don’t stress yourself out if it doesn’t seem like it’s pushed in all the way.

Peter’s other accessories include a set of black hands for the few times he wore gloves in the show. There are cuffs for the gloves that slide over his forearms to complete the look. He also has an alternate, angry, expression which is appropriate for when he’s busting ghosts or annoyed with Slimer. Speaking of, we get a Slimer! He looks to be 100% on-model to the point where the resemblance is borderline mystifying. This is one of the most fun characters I’ve ever had the privilege of just holding in my hand and looking at – he looks that good. He has his own translucent, green, stand and if I have one complaint it’s that he doesn’t have a taller stand. This one puts the top of his head at Peter’s mid-thigh level when it would be great to get him up to eye level. Slimer is minimally articulated with swivels at the shoulders. There’s also a simple disc stand for Peter, but he doesn’t seem to need it. It’s not decorative or anything so it’s likely to stay in the box. Mondo also tossed in some cardboard ghosts and standees which was an unadvertised bonus item. It’s kind of fun, but I don’t see myself ever punching them out of the cardboard.

Even though Slimer is more of the friendly ghost variety, Peter does need to but ghosts from time to time. To do so he has a blast effect for his proton pack. It’s a clear plastic with just a hint of blue in it. It’s subtle, some would probably argue too subtle, but it’s a reasonable facsimile of what we used to see in the show. It slides onto the wand’s tip and doesn’t disrupt the weight of the figure any. He also has an accessory for the trap. The inner yellow doors of the trap are separate piece – a brick of plastic than can slide out. You can replace it with a set of open doors with lightning streaking out and the ghost, Samhain, getting pulled in. It’s a really fun idea and is also included with the standard version of Peter so those who skipped the ghost still have something they can bust.

And speaking of, we get Samhain! He’s much taller than Peter coming it at around 9″ tall. He’s a pretty simple design with a purplish robe and a jack-o-lantern head. Since he doesn’t have feet, he’s very easy to stand and is unlikely to ever tumble off your shelf. His default portait features narrow, black, eyes and a menacing grin. He also has two additional portraits both featuring his yellow eyes which I think we saw more of in his second appearance in the show. One alternate portrait features a toothy grin while the other an angry howl. He’s appropriately creepy, and like Slimer, really on-model. He also has an extra set of hands. His default ones are these curling, gesture, hands and he has an optional open right hand and a clawing left hand.

Where both figures are going to come up short is in the articulation department. Samhain is extremely limited as he just has head, diaphragm, shoulder, elbow, and wrist articulation. He’s basically all about presence, but at least what’s there works fine. Peter has a double ball joint at the head, hinged-ball shoulders, single elbows, ball-hinge wrists, waist cut, ball-socket hips, single knees, and ankles that hinge and rock. There’s an attempt at something of a butterfly joint at the shoulders, but it really doesn’t do anything. The elbows will bend 90 degrees, but the knees come up short. You do get a little rotation at both the knee and elbow, and the ankles and wrists work fine. The head really can’t look up or down and the tilt is pretty minimal. The hips are a bit tight and probably only go out to the side 45 degrees or so and do not kick forward and back effortlessly or with much range. He can get both hands onto his wand, and the hands are soft and pliable to minimize paint rub, but he can’t point it out straight from his body with two hands on it. Basically, when you want him to look like he’s shooting at a ghost, he needs to hold the wand across his belly or chest. It’s certainly not the most convincing thing and to really, properly, wield his proton pack he probably needs a more effective butterfly joint, but Mondo was clearly prioritizing the sculpt over articulation.

Which brings us to the final negative we need to talk about: the price. This set retailed for $202 with free shipping in the US. If you want just Peter, the price is $101. Why so high? Well, some of that is due to Hasbro. They hold the master toy license for Ghostbusters which Mondo had to work around with the licensee, Sony. Unlike a Paramount and Playmates situation with TMNT, Hasbro is a toy giant and not likely to get pushed around. Mondo hasn’t gone into the specifics, but they did cite that as an issue and expressed that this isn’t the price they wanted. It is assumed that in order for them to be compliant with the license, any 1:12 scale Ghostbusters toy had to be more than $100 and probably had some restrictions on where it could be sold and that sucks for us collectors. On the other hand, Mondo may not have been able to dictate the price as freely as it wanted to, but the company could have made the set feel a bit more value-friendly. One extra portrait and one extra set of hands (which is basically duplicative since they’re more gripping hands) is pretty slight. Peter, at a minimum, should have another portrait that’s probably a scared one or a slimed one. Some expressive hands, maybe emulating their dance during the ending credits, would have also been welcomed. If he’s not holding something his hands look silly. They may not have wanted to give Slimer more articulation and break-up his sculpt, but he could have had another set of arms. And for Samhain, maybe an effect part of his own? Something like the aura effects Bandai does for its Dragon Ball figures would have looked cool.

What I’m basically getting to is that this set isn’t really worth the asking price. It wasn’t going to be and I knew that when I placed my order. It’s also why I’ve passed on the other ghosts and am just getting the remaining Ghostbusters to round out my collection. That doesn’t mean I’m unhappy to have this. One can dislike the price and feel like they’re being overcharged while still enjoying the finished product. I’ve certainly paid for plenty of meals, drinks, and entertainment and felt like I was getting a bad deal, but still enjoyed what I paid for. I mean, I have been to Disney World many times. These figures aren’t perfect, but they look great. I’ll likely never have need of another set of figures based on The Real Ghostbusters when all is said and done. And considering how long I’ve had to wait for them, I’m okay with paying a little extra. If you loved the show and the old toyline, chances are you’ll be okay with it too.

The 1980s sometimes feel like they belonged to the Ghostbusters. That’s because, for me, the Ghostbusters were always around. The film came out when I was but a wee baby, but by the time I had a real interest in television The Real Ghostbusters (not to be confused with the Filmation series) was airing in syndication every afternoon on ABC. To go along with that series were numerous toys and action figures. Some were roleplaying toys and many came with a vial of actual slime – something my mother still can recall the smell of because she had to clean up so much of it. My first big Christmas present I can recall was the much sought after Ghostbuster’s Fire House. It had a whirling pole the figures could ride down and even featured room for Ecto-1 where it could burst forth from behind the double red doors just like it did on TV.

Every weekday at 4:30 you could find me in front of the TV watching this one.

Being a cartoon about ghost hunting, The Real Ghostbusters naturally lent itself quite well to Halloween. There are dedicated Halloween episodes of the show, but almost any episode works. The show ran from 1986 until 1991totaling 140 episodes when it finished up under the title of Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters. Along the way Lorenzo Music was replaced by Dave Coulier as the voice of Peter Venkman, a truly horrible decision at the time. Arsenio Hall, voice of Winston, also left the show and was replaced by Buster Jones. The show was a DiC production with Saban providing the music including a redone version of the popular song from the film. The pilot, which the opening animation sourced, was animated by the famed TMS Entertainment production company in case you ever wondered why it looked so much better than the actual show, which actually looks pretty good all things considered as DiC basically shopped it around so TMS did some episodes as well as Toei Animation.

The inaugural season for The Real Ghostbusters was a tidy 13 episodes which ended with a Christmas episode. Proving that the Ghostbusters could handle Christmas as well as Halloween, “Xmas Marks the Spot” premiered on December 13, 1986 and would be the last new episode of the show for almost a year when season 2 premiered in November. While it may seem like Christmas is an odd fit for the property, there is one rather famous story that features ghosts prominently thus serving as the entry point for our special.

Peter, Egon, Ray, and Winston made-up the team with Slimer also soaking up a great deal of screen time.

Yes, that story is A Christmas Carol. You don’t need me to recap it, nor do you probably need me to remind you that adaptations of that tale are the bane of Christmas specials. It’s been done, though in 1986 that feeling may not have been as pervasive as it is today. The Real Ghostbusters at least gets credit for approaching the old tale from a different perspective. It’s also a bit peculiar as it’s going to treat that story as if it’s fact. Essentially, the Ghostbusters are going to somehow stumble through time and bust the ghosts meant to turn Ebenezer Scrooge around. Scrooge is apparently really important to the existence of Christmas, and the Ghostbusters will have to mess around with time to undo their mistake and ultimately save Christmas.

Nothing like a blizzard to set the mood.

The episode opens with the four Ghostbusters driving home from a job in upstate New York. The snow is coming down and visibility is poor, and so are spirits. Winston (Arsenio Hall) in particular is dismayed to be working on Christmas Eve and Ray (Frank Welker) is apparently responsible for a job not going well (something about a cat needing to regrow its fur). When Winston looks to find someone to share in his disapproval of working Christmas Eve he tries Peter (Lorenzo Music), but Pete couldn’t care less about Christmas. They soon arrive at a fork in the road and the strange thing is none of them can recall seeing it on their way in. Egon (Maurice Lamarche) tells Ray to take a left and as the Ecto-1 heads through the snow we see the turnpike sign has been knocked down and partially buried in snow.

No one is particularly happy with the current predicament, but Winston is especially ticked to be working on Christmas Eve.

Eventually, the Ecto-1 gives out and the Ghostbusters are forced to resume their journey on foot. For some reason, they decide to strap on their proton packs. Winston once again tries to get Pete to share in his misery, but Pete shrugs him off. As Pete walks off, Ray explains to Winston that Pete doesn’t really like Christmas because his dad was always away as a kid. Egon says his apparent careless attitude towards Christmas is likely a coping mechanism and Winston adds once you spend so long pretending you don’t care about Christmas, you start to believe it.

As the four walk, a strange vortex appears up ahead. They don’t seem to notice it, but they do notice the sudden gust of wind that tosses them into a snowbank. Once they emerge from the snow they’re surprised to see a village down below. Oddly, it’s very old looking, but they reason their must be a phone there somewhere. As they head off into town, we see a man with a boy on his shoulders head into a meat shop. The shopkeeper addresses him as Bob Cratchit (Lamarche) and he’s here for his Christmas duck. The shopkeeper hands over what looks like a Christmas sparrow, but Cratchit and his son don’t let it bother them as they head home. Once gone, the shopkeeper remarks to a woman in the store that Tiny Tim is always so optimistic and expresses regret that his father is stuck working for someone like Ebenezer Scrooge.

‘Tis a fine bird, Master Cratchit!

The Ghostbusters are walking through the streets of this village apparently trapped in time, but don’t seem to pay it any mind. They hear a cry up ahead and look up to a ghost draped in chains emerge from a home and speed off into the night. Continued cries from inside prompt them to run in. They head for the bedroom and inside they find an old man in bed and three ghosts: a female, a large bearded male, and a grim reaper like apparition. The Ghostbusters open fire while the ghosts reprimand them. They don’t care though and soon trap the ghosts.

A jubilant man jumps up and celebrates at the vanquishing of the ghosts. This old man (Peter Renaday) is positively delighted until Peter hands him a bill. He then sours on the Ghostbusters and initially says he won’t pay, but Ray threatens to set the ghosts free so the old man acquiesces. He tosses Ray a coin and at first Peter is ready to demand more money. Ray points out it’s an 1837 coin in mint condition and Peter seems to think it’s satisfactory upon hearing this. With the man not in possession of a phone, the Ghostbusters take their leave. Meanwhile, the old man heads for his window while talking to himself. He reveals what most likely already figured out, that his name is Ebenezer Scrooge, and feeling confident that he overcame the ghosts he declares war on Christmas!

The Ghostbusters, having failed to find a phone anywhere, return to the Ecto-1. To their surprise, the engine fires up and they head back to presumably take a right at the fork in the road. They end up back home in New York City and upon arriving Ray says he and Winston will take Pete with them to get a Christmas tree. Janine (Laura Summer) scoffs when she hears that and even gives them a “Bah! Humbug!” which surprises Egon. Slimer (Welker) even voices his displeasure at the prospect of a Christmas tree.

Ray, Winston, and Peter head for Fifth Avenue where they can apparently purchase a tree. Along the way they find everyone is not in much of a Christmas mood and when Winston wishes some random guy a “Merry Christmas,” he gets a “Bah! Humbug!” in return. When they get to Fifth, Ray is shocked to see no Christmas decorations at all. Instead, the visage of Scrooge is everywhere and there’s even books for sale penned by Scrooge himself about how he vanquished Christmas by defeating the three ghosts. A bystander (Marilyn Lightstone) even clues them in when she hears Ray talking about the ghosts. At this point they figure out what happened and quickly realize they need to get back to the firehouse before Egon places the three ghosts in the containment unit. Peter, on the other hand, doesn’t think this new present is so bad.

The three get back to the firehouse, but they find out they’re too late. Egon had just emptied the trap dumping the ghosts into the containment unit. The only way to set them free is to free all of the ghosts also locked up in there. Egon, even though he knew something was up, is still surprised to find out from Ray that they went back in time and captured the ghosts of Past, Present, and Future. Ray is the one to break the bad news that they may have just killed Christmas.

As pedestrians on New York’s streets scream humbug at each other, the Ghostbusters are inside trying to figure out how to right this wrong. Peter recaps what happened (because this is the scene coming back from a commercial break) while Egon reveals a way to fix this. He explains he can open up a crack in the containment unit allowing him to enter. Once inside, he’ll have to find the ghosts and free them. The problem is, time is of the essence. It seems the past and present, as a result of that vortex, are operating simultaneously so time is passing in both. They can’t just go back to the point in time at which they trapped the ghosts. Confusing, isn’t it? Janine doesn’t see why they care about Christmas so much, and Winston uses her attitude to show Peter how he was acting, though he insists he wasn’t that bad.

Egon’s got some work to do.

Ray thinks it’s crazy for Egon to go in alone, but because of the time constraints Egon says it must be this way. The other three are to head back to Scrooge, for if Egon can’t find the real ghosts, they’ll have to play the parts. As they leave, Egon informs Janine he’ll need her help with this. With hearts in her eyes, she excitedly agrees though she insists she’s doing it for Egon and not Christmas.

At Scrooge’s home, the old man is already working on his novel while the Ghostbusters get set up on a rooftop. Peter is up first and he’s dressed as some sort of Tooth Fairy or something to play the Ghost of Christmas Past. He swings in through Scrooge’s window and knocks him over causing his glasses to fall off. Even without the glasses, Scrooge isn’t convinced by Venkman’s disguise and is confused why the ghost would return after what transpired earlier. Peter activates some flares and a flashlight he’s wearing on his head to complete the ensemble. He then produces a Viewfinder which is apparently going to serve as Scrooge’s window into the past.

At headquarters, Egon is basically dressed up like an astronaut with Slimer and Janine looking on. He has some ray gun pointed at the containment unit that’s on blast. It will allow for a small opening, I guess, while Egon’s suit will allow him to assume a molecular state that will grant him passage. The key part being he can only stay in that state for an hour. If he’s not back in time he’ll be trapped forever. He heads in and Janine heads upstairs to watch on a monitor. Inside the containment unit is basically like the movie Tron, at least the entering part. Slimer notices the ray gun machine is overheating, but he fails to get Janine’s attention leaving him to blow on it in a futile manner.

Always good to have a Viewfinder on hand in case you find yourself stuck in the past.

Venkman is apparently having an all right time at convincing Scrooge he’s a legit ghost. The Viewfinder is loaded with pictures of a boarding school that Scrooge either recognizes as his own school or he’s just old enough to confuse it for his actual school (that seems more likely). Meanwhile, Venkman is pushing him around in circles in a wheelchair and claiming they’re flying. He’s clearly running out of breath. Scrooge describes how he was left at school by his father who had no time for Christmas, but Scrooge didn’t mind because he always had his books and things. Venkman takes a seat and explains how Scrooge’s view of Christmas is wrong, and thus realizes his own attitude has been wrong this whole time as well (aww). He’s dismayed to learn that Scrooge hasn’t quite been convinced of Christmas’s worth though, and takes his leave the same way he came in though not without some difficulty.

Inside the containment unit, which now just looks like floating rocks, Egon searches for the ghosts. Janine is able to watch on a monitor and communicate with Egon via a headset. Slimer is still trying to keep the machine from breaking apart, but it won’t matter if Egon can’t find the ghosts. Meanwhile, Winston is swinging around the rooftops of old England dressed as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Ray isn’t sure they can keep this up for much longer.

Inside the containment unit, Janine urges Egon to give up, but of course he finds the ghosts at the last minute. He tells them to follow him and they say nothing and do as they’re told. At this point, many of the other ghosts have realized Egon is in there. This being the season finale, several ghosts from earlier episodes are shown and they start chasing Egon. This was probably rewarding for viewers who saw all of the episodes, though the only one I personally remember is Samhain, the Halloween ghost.

Janine heads downstairs and sees Slimer holding onto an open window and the ray gun machine about to blow. Egon then emerges with the ghosts just as the gun explodes. He closes the containment unit and returns to a more traditional state of being. He then implores the ghosts to jump in his trap citing he has no time to explain. Surprisingly, they agree.

Back in the past, Ray is dressed in a sheet and trying perhaps too faithfully to play the role of the Ghost of Christmas Future. He’s not speaking so Scrooge and he are essentially playing Charades. Egon arrives, still in his astronaut suit, and he races inside shoving Ray aside. He frees the ghosts then informs Scrooge what is to befall him this night. For his part, Scrooge seems dismayed that he has to endure another round of ghosts so maybe their work will be easier than usual. The Ghost of Christmas Past (Mona Marshall) then steps in to take things from the top. On the roof, the Ghostbusters get a minor lecture from the Ghost of Christmas Present (LaMarche) and he asks Pete if he too learned a lesson. Apparently, this whole time travel thing occurred because Pete had lost faith in Christmas. Well, it worked and Peter is totally onboard now. Present then uses his ghostly powers to send the Ghostbusters home.

Scrooge isn’t exactly thrilled to find out he’s got more ghosts on the way.

Back home, the Ghostbusters are delighted to see that Christmas has indeed been saved. They gather round a punch bowl that looks like it’s just full of water and Pete is the one to propose a toast to Christmas. Winston remarks how he thought the tale of Scrooge was just a story (are we now trying to convince viewers it was real?) and he wonders aloud if other apparent works of fiction could be real. On cue, a booming voice is heard from outside and it unmistakably belongs to Santa Claus (Welker). He’s shouting out commands to the reindeer and giving a hearty laugh. Peter mugs for the camera and gives a “Why not?” while Santa goes into his routine, “Merry Christmas to all,” with the Ghostbusters finishing the line, “…and to all a good night!”

Where we find out this whole episode was basically Peter’s fault for not liking Christmas.

And thus ends a rather unconventional adaption of a A Christmas Carol. It probably is a little confusing for younger viewers who may have walked away thinking the story of Scrooge is true. If it also convinced them that Santa is real as well then I suppose the deception is worth it. It is a clever way to marry a brand like the Ghostbusters to Christmas. It’s definitely a bit contrived, especially the subplot surrounding Peter, but not annoyingly so.

Well, Christmas is saved, time to get our drink on!

Then again, I also have fond memories of this show. The personalities of the individual Ghostbusters all entertain me. Winston is the everyman and we’re supposed to identify with him the most. Ray is the more emotional one which is why he gets to deliver the dramatic news that they killed Christmas. Egon is the brain who is intrigued by everything, often reacting to things with a “Fascinating.” Peter is the one given the sarcastic remarks, much like his film persona, and Lorenzo Music’s performance is basically legendary. He’s just so good at deadpanning Peter’s lines that they don’t even have to be that well-written. This episode was light on Slimer, which is probably for the best. In hindsight, I’m surprised he didn’t join Egon or something in searching for the ghosts, but I don’t think he would have added much.

This show was always pretty good at making the ghosts actually scary.

Visually this show has always been solid. I often associate the turn in children’s animation occurring with the Disney Afternoon, but The Real Ghostbusters is no slouch. It’s miles ahead of the likes of He-Man or Transformers and overall I found this one engaging from a visual sense. Peter’s methods of duping Scrooge were clever and visually amusing, as was Ray’s awful costume. Seeing the inside of the containment unit was probably thrilling for viewers as well. I don’t recall this episode specifically, but I recall other episodes that took place inside the unit as being among my favorite when I was a kid.

I have to give this one credit, the concept is pretty unique and certainly on-brand for the show.

As a Christmas special, this one gets the job done. It may go the lame route in adapting A Christmas Carol, but it’s unique enough to get away with it. The episode has Pete learn about the importance of Christmas, though in a mostly superficial sense. There isn’t some grand meaning assigned to the holiday, we’re just supposed to accept that it’s good and people should like it. That’s fine, as not everything needs to get too preachy. The big question, of course, is should you watch this? If you like the Ghostbusters, then why not? It’s fine. It won’t make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but it may make you laugh and is at least visually entertaining.

If you wish to watch “Xmas Marks the Spot” then your best bet is to either purchase it digitally or on DVD. The show used to stream on Netflix, but sadly it was removed this year. It’s on Volume I of the DVD release which contains 30 episodes and is probably worth it to fans of the show. If you have young kids who either liked the movies or enjoy spooky stuff in general, then you may get enough enjoyment out of it to justify the purchase. It shouldn’t set you back much should you choose to go that route.


Lego Ghostbuster Firehouse

IMG_1125It’s been nearly two years since Lego unleashed its version of the famed Ecto-1 from the movie Ghostbusters. It’s been even longer since a concept for that vehicle,, as well as the firehouse appeared online. When Lego opted to only do the Ecto-1 set I thought that was it for the firehouse and Ghostbusters fans would have to make due with one very fine set. Imagine my surprise when an email showed up on my account from Lego advertising the new Ghostbuster Firehouse set. I don’t usually keep up to date with toy news so this came as a shock to me. I was quite delighted with what I saw, but a case of sticker shock tempered my enthusiasm some. I got past that though, and would end up making the most expensive toy purchase of my life.

How much is too much for a set of plastic building blocks? Especially when the purchaser is an adult. I don’t know, but it can’t be much more than the $349.99 MSRP for the Ghostbuster Firehouse. Set number 75827 is indeed a pricey one but it’s also an impressive one. Totaling over 4600 pieces, the iconic firehouse is a mighty 2 feet in height and just as long. Multiple hinges make it very accessible on the interior and the three-floor layout provides optimal space for the nine mini figures and three ghosts it comes with. The interior is surprisingly movie accurate, in particular the first floor with the placement of Janine and Venkman’s desks. Pretty much everything important from the films is present including the fire pole, “dancing” toaster, and containment unit. When compared with the layout of The Simpson house, it blows it away in terms of screen to brick accuracy, which is what many adult collectors care about most.

With such a large assortment of pieces, the build process is a slow one. Not being one who has extensive experience with Lego sets, it took me a solid week to complete the set basically spending a couple hours per night. I didn’t try to go too fast and wanted to savor the build as it’s what is most fun about these things. Lego sets are like puzzles but with way better results. Because the building is so large, some parts do get a bit tedious. In particular, the actual exterior of the building. Lego tries to break that process up as much as possible but it’s an unavoidable reality of such a set. Other limitations of the set include the lack of a basement, but Lego made the wise choice to tuck the containment unit in under the stairs. Ecto-1 fits inside, but not all the way without removing Janine’s desk, which is unfortunate, but understandable since the set is already pretty damn big. The bedroom layout is not exact to the film either, but sacrifices have to be made somewhere. Lego still managed to fit all three beds into the room without making it look ridiculous.

Slimed Peter and possessed Dana.

The set includes nine mini figures and three ghosts, one of which is Slimer. Expectedly another set of Ghostbusters are included. For the most part, they’re the same as the four included with Ecto-1 but with a couple of differences. For one, each character now has the no ghosts logo on their sleeve which looks nice. Winston has a different, and better, hair piece so he looks less like Billy Dee Williams. Venkman is the only true variant though as he comes slimed from his first encounter with Slimer (he too sports a superior hair piece to the one that came with the Ecto-1 set). He looks great and I am particularly fond of his angry face. Janine is also included, as are possessed versions of Dana and Louis. Louis even comes with a second head that includes a chin-strap so he can wear a colander on his head to recreate the scene where Egon checks him out. The library ghost is featured and she has a second hair piece to go from calm book reader to screaming ghoul. The ghost from the taxi cab is also included. He looks good, but is kind of an odd choice since he doesn’t have his car and the set really misses Walter Peck. I suppose Peck is generic enough looking that one could find a decent substitute somewhere. Slimer looks great and has movable arms. The other two ghosts are suitable and kind of remind me of the generic ghosts that came with the old action figures. Three transparent stick-like pieces are included for each ghost to simulate flight. All in all, the set includes a nice assortment of mini figures.

R.I.P. H.R.

The Ghostbusters come armed with proton packs that have to be assembled. They’re the same as the packs from the Ecto-1 set. They also have traps (which look better than the one that came with the Ecto-1 set) and walkie talkies and Egon has a PK Meter. Clutter abounds in the firehouse in the form of magazines, news papers, and cardboard boxes. They seem simple, but add a nice touch of authenticity. The best little nugget of the set though goes to the sticker on Venkman’s backboard which has a note on it that says “R.I.P. H.R.” for Harold Ramis. Way to make it dusty in here, Lego.

If you love the Ghostbusters and have the extra coin laying around, this is one hell of a set and a fun way to spend some free time. The end result makes for an impressive display and if you have kids that you trust, it’s probably pretty fun to play with too. It blows away that old firehouse toy I had when I was a kid (I love how the fire pole accessory here is basically the same concept as it feels like a callback to my old, beloved, toy) and it’s easily the finest Lego set I’ve ever purchased. I can’t think of another set that would make sense for Lego to produce based on the Ghostbusters. I suppose they could do a rooftop scene from the climax of the first film but I don’t think I’d be interested. A big Lego figure of Stay-Puft would be awesome though! I don’t know if this set is worth $350, but I did have fun with it and I don’t regret my purchase. A job well done, Lego!
